2.2.4. Store Depths
• Typically, structures have a depth of 120-140 feet, but larger stores may require more
room.
• Adding mezzanines or basements can reduce the depth dimension by 20-25%.

2.2.5 Steps & Stairs
• The risers must be uniformly 150mm tall, and the treads must also be uniformly
300mm wide.
• To ensure visibility and safety, each stair edge must have a 50mm broad strip of
bright or contrasting colour.
• A flight's maximum height between landings should be no more than 1200mm.
• Landings must be 1200mm distant from any door swing to assure clearance, and steps
must be at least 1200mm wide.
• Handrails must be built constantly on both sides of the staircase, including any
surrounding walls, at two heights: 760mm and 900mm.
• Warning tiles must be placed 300mm from the start and end of all stairs to alert
people to their presence, and nosing, or protruding edges, should be avoided to
prevent tripping hazards.
2.2.6. Handrails
• Handrails/grab bars are critical characteristics that must be easy to grasp and provide
a solid and pleasant grip so that the hand can move over the rail without impediment.
• Handrails should be round, 38mm in diameter, at least 50mm clear of two levels
(760mm and 900mm from the finished floor), and extend at least 300mm slip-
resistant with round ends and a circular portion of 38-50mm in diameter.
• Free of sharp or abrasive materials and continuous gripping surfaces with no
interruptions or obstructions to break a handhold.
