2.2.4 Inauguration of Vandalur Zoo. (1985)
Construction began in 1979 on what was originally a scrub jungle with few trees. Zoo
authorities and local villagers gathered seeds from various trees to reforest the area,

creating an environment that mirrored natural habitats and supported the biological
and physiological needs of the zoo's animals. The facility was officially opened to the
public on July 24, 1985, by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.G.
Ramachandran, following the completion of major construction efforts.

Currently, Arignar Anna Zoological Park ranks as one of the largest zoos in
Southeast Asia, spreading across 1,490 acres. It is home to over 2,300 animals from
172 different species, attracting approximately two million visitors each year.

Located in Vandalur, southwest of Chennai, the zoo is strategically positioned close to major
transportation links, making it accessible via train and bus routes. This accessibility supports
the zoo’s mission to educate a broad demographic on conservation issues.
