1. INTRODUCTION

                  1.1 Objective

The primary objective of this thesis is to reimagine Arignar Anna Zoological Park in
Vandalur, transforming it into an ethical conservation zoo that leads the way in animal

welfare, conservation efforts, and visitor education. This includes the redesign of specific
habitats and the introduction of an Experience Center that exemplifies a shift towards

non-live animal exhibits and interactive educational platforms.

                  1.2 Motivation

The motivation for this project stems from the urgent need to evolve traditional zoological
practices to address ethical concerns and conservation realities.

Improve conditions to better reflect animals' natural habitats and behaviors,

ensuring their physical and psychological well-being. This effort involves upgrading

existing enclosures to meet and exceed standards set by the Central Zoo Authority

(CZA), particularly for aviaries, where current facilities may fall short. Additionally,
the redesign will focus on adapting enclosures to better simulate natural

environments, helping to maintain the health and vitality of the animals during

extreme weather, such as the summer heat. Efforts will be made to prioritize animal
welfare over visual entertainment for visitors, ensuring that each species thrives in a

setting that respects and promotes their inherent behaviors and needs.

                  1.2.2 Addressing Ethical Issues

Addressing Ethical Issues: Shift the traditional zoo model to focus more on

conservation and education, lessening the moral conflicts associated with animal
captivity. This shift is crucial not only to address ethical concerns but also to

                                                                                                          7
