1.3 Background
Established in 1855, Arignar Anna Zoological Park is the first public zoo in India and is
among the largest in Southeast Asia. Despite its historical significance, the park's facilities
have become outdated, calling for a comprehensive redevelopment to meet current standards
of animal welfare and visitor engagement. The park's location in Vandalur, a suburb of
Chennai, makes it an ideal candidate for showcasing innovations in zoo design and
conservation practices.
