2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND GOALS
2.1 Vision
The vision for this project is to revitalize the existing zoological park infrastructure,
introducing an Experience Center that promotes ethical practices and serves as a prototype

for future zoological parks. This involves a significant redesign of the park layout and
specific animal habitats to enhance both animal welfare and visitor experience.
2.2 Historical Context
2.2.1 Dr. Edward Belford's Vision. (1855)
The Chennai Zoo, originally called Madras Zoo, was founded on November 23, 1855,
by Dr. Edward Belfour, the then director of the Government Central Museum in
Madras. The zoo began with a collection donated by the Nawab of the Carnatic,
originally intended for the museum. Initiated on the museum premises, the zoo
expanded rapidly, and within a year, it housed over 300 animals from various
species, marking the start of its journey as a significant conservation and educational
facility.
2.2.2 Management Transfer and Relocation to People's Park, Madras. (1861)
Subsequently, in 1861, responsibility for the Madras Zoo was handed over to the
Madras Corporation. It was then relocated to People's Park, situated near the
Chennai Central Railway Station in Park Town.
2.2.3 Relocation to Vandalur Forest Reserve: A New Beginning for Wildlife. (1976)
In 1976, facing the limitations of inadequate land and the need for environments
suitable for animal behavior and infrastructure, a comprehensive study led to the
selection of Vandalur Forest Reserve as the new site. With its natural abundance and
