The distance between the front edge of the seat and the back of the seat in front controls the
amount of space. The minimum space required for people to pass along a row when using
traditional seating is 300 mm, and this space grows as more chairs are arranged in a row.
The clearance for continental seating is 500 mm or more, but not less than 400 mm.

                      3.4.4 Gangways

Gangways are necessary escape routes, so the number of seats occupied determines how
wide they should be. In the lowest case, 1100 mm. Gangways must have steps that extend

the entire width, with risers and treads that are constant in each run. If the seating rake is
sleeper, they can be ramped up to 10%.

                      3.4.5 Seating geometry

Typically, rows of seats are arranged in a straight or curved pattern with their backs to the
platform or stage. Additional configurations include angled rows, straight rows with curved
changes in direction, and straight rows inside conspicuous seat blocks.

3.4.6 Sightlines for a seated audience

To the extent permitted by the auditorium's section and plan, each member of the audience
must have an unobstructed view of the platform or stage above the heads in front of them
                      and free of overhangs.
