2.1.2.3. Architectural Heritage- Residential

Planning Layout- The vernacular residential architecture of Anegundi features linear

arrangement of houses on the both sides of the streets. The residences are generally single
storeyed structures. These residences lack any kind of setback from the street or the sides, often

sharing walls with the adjacent structures. The royal and nobles as per their status in the society,

generally have two-storey residences with a bigger front yard and compound walls.

Construction Materials and Architectural Features: The construction materials such as
stone which is abundantly found in the region, forms the wall and is normally two feet wide.

Timber or bamboo is used for the windows and door frames, roof structure, pillars. These are
beautifully carved in various motifs that are considered auspicious [Fig. 18]. Thin stone slabs

form the lintels and sills [Fig. 17]. Most residences have a central courtyard or a skylight
depending on the status of the house owner in the society. Smaller homes use inverted terracotta

pots with a cutout to let in light from above [Fig. 19]. In other cases of a large courtyard, a

small brick parapet around the opening in the roof provides natural light and ventilation.
