2.1.2.2.       Architectural Heritage- Institutional


               The well-known heritage structures of Anegundi include the Gagan Mahal, Modalina Bagilu
               (North gate) and Talwarghatta (South gate), Anegundi Fort, Krishnadevaraya’s Tomb or 64

               pillared hall, Navabrindhavanam and the village lies within fortifications made of large stones.


               Gagan Mahal, also known as Sky Palace or Old Palace, is an architectural marvel that lies in

               the centre of Anegundi. It was constructed during the Vijayanagara period. The main purpose
               of this building was to serve as the royal palace and administrative center. The palace is a blend

               of architectural grandeur and cultural richness of the medieval era. [Fig. 11]

               The architecture of Gagan Mahal is renowned for its impressive design elements and scale,

               designed  in  a  blend  of  Islamic  and  Hindu  architectural  styles,  thus,  reflecting  the  eclectic
               cultural influences prevalent during the Vijayanagara era. [Fig. 12] The spatial organization

               comprises of halls, courtyards, chambers, and balconies. One of the exquisite spaces is the hall,
               now a courtyard, which is believed to be used for conducting various ceremonies. It is also

               believed to have high ceiling supported with intricately carved pillars and arches, representing

               the craftsmanship of the era. [Fig.13] The design of the palace allowed for cross ventilation,
               natural lighting, and ambient environment for the residents.
