The Sancaklar Mosque in Buyukçekmece, Istanbul, represents a divergence from traditional
discussions about mosque design by emphasizing the fundamental qualities of religious
space. Raising walls encircling the upper courtyard establish a clear demarcation, guiding
guests from the bustling street outside into the tranquil public park. Positioned beneath a
prominent canopy, the mosque blends in with the surrounding landscape, providing a
transforming experience as you enter a cave-like interior. The prayer hall is illuminated by
slits along the Qiblah wall, emphasizing spirituality and orientation.
The KAFD Grand Mosque in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, balances tradition and modernity,
emerging as a work of art and a spiritual sanctuary. Its geometric designs, which provide sun
shading and sculptural articulation, are derived from Islamic patterns and are inspired by the
desert rose. An architectural marvel, the mosque defies conventional Islamic architecture by
creating an interior space devoid of columns. Inside, the design enhances the spiritual
atmosphere with a unique mihrab, triangular ceiling panels, and expertly crafted windows
featuring calligraphy.
