5. CONCEPT AND DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The process of design development for this Thesis Project has involved
multiple modifications and resultant changes. Yet, 4 key characteristics
remain in the evolution of the design, which have remained unchanged.
Thesis Report V-SPARC VIT
5.1. An Icon for Tiruppur
The first and foremost notion of the design conception, was to create an
iconic landmark for the city of Tiruppur. With the central location and
multiple viewpoints to the project site, it was important to have the form
standout. It was also important to create this project, highlighting the
potential of what Tiruppur could have been built to, instead of haphazard
industrial expansion. In doing so, concepts like an accessible green roof, a
walkable roof like the High Line at New York, angular built structures,
orientation of structures on site, were evolved.
5.2. Site Layout & Zoning
The project has two key components – an exhibition centre and a
convention centre. Considering the site being linear, running North-South,
and that the two functions are distinct, since inception it made sense to
bifurcate the access to these. The exhibition block would have access from the
newly constructed Northern Road. The convention block would have access
from the one-way Southern Road. In between the two blocks would be a large
central open space that would help in congregating people and be a public
space that would lead to the canal front.
