5.5. Integrating Public Space

The last and most important aspect of the concept development was

making public spaces a key part of the design. Tiruppur over time, has very

minimal public spaces that the residents have access too. Unplanned
urbanisation has hardly left any open spaces in the city. Creating a thesis

project with a core public function like an exhibition and convention centre, it

was important to see how public spaces could be brought in.

A unique aspect was in creating a green roof over one of the exhibition halls

that is accessible to the users. Designed at a gradual 1:12 slope, this leads to

the roof of the structure, where a roof level connecting public corridor is

provided. This corridor connects all the 3 exhibition blocks, crosses over the
open congregational space in the centre, moves over the auditorium roof and

eventually descends to the ground level through another accessible green roof.

Besides this connecting corridor, a large expanse of open congregational space

is provided in the middle of the site- accessible to users of both the exhibition

and convention centre. This space is also planned to extend towards the
western edge and provide access to the western canal front, making use of the

                     existing canal front as well.
