INDUSTRY EXPERT TALK

      Mr. Srinivasan Iyer, Managing Director,

Interface Design Associates Pvt. Ltd., Navi Mumbai.

Krishnamurthy Srinivasan Iyer, an IIT-ian from Chennai and a Post-Graduate
in Financial Management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management
Studies, India is a standing example of entrepreneurial success and academic
excellence blended in one. As the Managing Director of Interface Design
Associates Pvt. Ltd., a Mechatronics and Embedded Technologies company, he
has carved a commendable niche in the market and been a pioneer in making
the first ‘truly Indian CNC’. The success drive has been aptly supported by his
associates, who believe in his ‘Living Excellence with Applied Technology.’ He
was instrumental in developing the first indigenous laser based system for
                                 nuclear fuel bundle cutting.
He shares that “The important challenges in the industry standards now that has been a complete revolution
in the way we design systems are
      CAD/CAM - from manual drafting to 2-D with AutoCAD to 3D modelling with Solidworks/Fustion 360.

 Manufacturing: The transformation from manual machines to CNC machines which have changed both
the process and the speed of mechanical engineering.
 Confluence of technologies: All different branches of engineering have converged - so Mech,
Electronics, Controls and Software - all of these have become important to our industry.

My advice to the student fraternity is to train themselves to focus their mind and attention on to one
job at a time. “Become multi-skilled - a single skill is no longer enough in the world as jobs are also becoming
more broad-based. Be a constant learner to adapt to newer technologies and mainly learn to be a team
player. Industry certification / professional courses in CAD/CAM, Robotics, and Embedded Programming are
     a plus to your career”.

My favorite quote is "Champions are not the ones who always win races - champions are the ones
who get out there and try. And try harder the next time. And even harder the next time”. Be Champions!

                                              Vandana Kandukuru,

                            DGM, Tata Motors Ltd, Jamshedpur.

Ms Vandana Kandukuru is a Mechanical Engineer from Sri Venkateswara
University, Tirupati with Post-graduation in Tool and Die Design from Central
institute of Tool Design, Hyderabad. She has almost 17 years of domain knowledge
in Sheet Metal Tooling design, facility planning and line commissioning activities.
In her current role, she is heading Factory planning and Improvement group of
BIW (Body In White) weld shop.

      Industry expectations from mechanical engineers…

“Industry today expects students to have more of application centred academic exposure and subject
understanding. Exposure to working on projects both at the institute and at Industry through internships is
essential. Students should develop capability to bring in a fresh perspective of change in an organization’s
pursuit of excellence and catalysing or hastening adoption and promotion of current and new technologies.
Students should have exposure to current and evolving trends in a new technologies”.

Industry expects students to possess passion and natural flair for developing into competent engineers in core
areas. Students should also work on strengthening their soft skills based around presentation, communication
     and professional etiquette etc. 16
