How did VIT shape your personality and meet your expectations?*
Each of the teaching as well as non- teaching staff with whom I have
had occasion to interact which influenced my decision making and have
taught me lessons apart from the course syllabi thereby preparing me
for competition as well. I’m thankful to each and every faculty of VIT for
activating hunger for knowledge and wisdom, inspiring me to plan my
future and become a better individual. VIT is one of the leading
engineering institutions with great track record in research and
placements where people come from different parts of the country. VIT
provides a great cultural diversity and exposure that helped in shaping
my personality. While organizing events and participating in club
activities, VIT made me more confident and enriched my
communication skills. VIT has imparted real life experiences, something
that one can’t grasp from the books. It has been the process of maturing,
taking responsibility and planning a future. Being a member of E2PC
helped me to engage with diverse groups of people and gaining
          Shri. Abhishek Kumar Garg, IAS
Assistant Commissioner (Shimla) leadership skills. The club events and the fests like Riviera and Gravitas
were great amalgamation of fun and learning.
How did school prepare you for your career?*
The School has been instrumental in inculcating in me a habit of thinking beyond the book by
conducting open book examination and also promoting project based learning whereby students get to have a
first hand experience of implementing the theories learnt in classes. It imbibed the traits of inquiry and critical
analysis. It helped me to be more application oriented.
What is your critical success factor/your USP?/Thought for my juniors*
One learning which I would like to share is that one should not bend down to the peer pressure, but, be
true to yourself in whatever career choice you makes. If one works tirelessly towards achieving goals, then one
will surely accomplish cherished goals. There'll be setbacks and they are just part of the journey.
I wasn't able to clear the UPSC examination in my first attempt but my perseverance, discipline, dedication and
continued hard work helped me reach where i am today. So remember that failures are just part of the journey it
is upto the person on how they leverage it.
What do you think is the updated requirement of industry from academic fraternity?*
Administration is getting accessible to the common people with technology bridging gaps. e- governance
plays a key role in providing quick solutions to the people. The Government is launching digital currency which is
an amalgamation of application of technology and finance. Fields like Artificial Intelligence, Block chain, IoT,
Rapid Prototyping are gaining traction and will be pillars of administration in the years to come. Also,
specialization along with R&D is the demand by administration as it can ease the governance while reducing cost
and increasing efficiency in service delivery. The focus on Industry 4.0, Energy, infrastructure, manufacturing
processes, materials are the fields where academic intervention is required for Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
In what ways can you make a knowledge sharing contribution to the school?*
I would be more than happy to act as a resource person and help my fellow VITians by motivating them
to achieving their goals in life.
Any other pivotal inputs from you end*
Process improvisation is required in our school. I believe that our school should be more proactive in
organizing industrial visits for practical orientation and give students a hands on experience in the industry.
They should make a holistic environment and promote quality research by investing in the latest machinery and
technology. Students should be motivated to under take research and publish quality paper and patents. Our
focus should be on making mechanical engineering an interdisciplinary field where students can provide
solution to the socio-economic, geographical, administrative, environmental challenges facing the country.
Also, there's need to promote startups in mechanical engineering particularly in defense, space, nanotechnology.
And, incentivizing students who volunteer for such endeavors. The School should conduct career counseling for
students to guide them about the opportunities after engineering.
The gap between industry and academia needs to be reduced and more job relevant skills and courses should be
promoted in line with the demand of industry. Periodic review of course structure and syllabi needs to be done
ensuring that curriculum is at par with international standards. Student exchange program should be promoted
at the University level which will broaden the learning of the students. More industry experts should be called in
to share their technical know how.
