Tiruppur, is known for its Industrial Cluster form of development- one
where there is a concentration of industries that are addressing common
opportunities. Multiple Medium and Small Scale (MSMEs) Industries exit,
catering to varying processes of knitwear – spinning, knitting, processing,
printing, garment manufacturing, embroidery, button and lace supplying,

cone and yarn processing and so on (Kalita). Through this format of working,
Tiruppur increased its exports from 10 Crores in 1985 to 5000 Crores in 2003
(The Town of Export Excellence).
Tiruppur today, manufactures and exports to many well-known
international brands, including Nike, Adidas, Primark, Ralph Lauren, Tommy
Hilfiger, H&M, amongst others. It has over ten thousand garment industries,
that employ over six lakh people. Recently in 2021/2022, the city exported
garments worth around 480 billion USD, accounting for around 54% of India’s
textile exports (Kumar, 2022).
1.1.2. Infrastructural Additions in Tiruppur
To ensure its sustenance as a global market leader in knitwear, the
Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) was set up in 1990. This Association of
knitwear exporters assists Tiruppur’s industries in locating suitable
international buyers and helps the foreign buyers find appropriate industries
in the city (The Town of Export Excellence).
Besides this, large scale developments have been established to address
the spike in demand. These include the Netaji Apparel Park, located 12 kms
from the city, houses over 60 garment units and the Tiruppur Export
Knitwear Industrial Complex, houses over 189 knitwear units. The TEA also
set up a permanent complex for organising trade fairs known as the India Knit
