4.2.3 Water supply
                     The    Puducherry     region   is

                     characterized by the deltaic

                     channels of the Rivers Gingee
                     and    Pennaiyar.    Puducherry

                     region has a great amount of

                     tanks and ponds. There are 59

                     system tanks (connected to
                     river    systems)      and    25

                     non-system     tanks (rain-fed)

                     that   irrigate   around    6600
                     hectares of land. The water

                     supply system is created by Public Works Department and the daily

                     operations    and maintenance is carried out Ariankuppam Commune

                     Panchayat. The total water abstracted for supply in Ariankuppam is 3.1 MLD
                     from the subsurface only. There are 9 bore wells in Ariankuppam. The water is

                     extracted and directly pumped into 7 OHT for distribution purposes. These

                     bore wells are 45m to 120 m deep and reported to be yielding about 700-1000
                     LPM




                     4.2.4 Vegetation

                     The mangrove exists as a fringing vegetation distributed along the sides of
                     Ariankuppam estuary/backwaters, some of the mangrove trees fall types of

                     mangrove species: avicennia rhizophora mucronata A. illicifolius types trees

                     in site. banyan trees coconut trees mango trees.
