Topic Title: Towards an Ethical Conservation Zoo
Supervisor: Prof. Jayadev N
Synopsis
Arignar Anna Zoological Park (or) Vandalur Zoological Park was established in the country in 1985,
and is also one of the largest zoological parks in Southeast Asia. This thesis reimagines Chennai’s
Vandalur Zoo by focusing on three key aspects: enhancing animal welfare and conservation,
elevating user experience, and enriching visitor entertainment and education.
The primary aim is to start with redesigning the existing layout, refurbishing and redesigning habitats
of Avian species, Tiger enclosures, and modification of enclosures for large herbivores.
At the heart of this transformation lies the creation of an Experience Center with characteristics
similar to a Natural History Museum. This architectural structure will feature a diverse array of
specimens, fossils, animatronics, projections, and lifelike holograms. By offering an engaging
experience without live animals, it aims to redefine the traditional zoo model, gradually reducing
reliance on live animals starting with exotic species. This structure alone will pave the way towards
a more ethical zoological park.
This center stands as a prototype for future zoos, advocating an ethical approach by providing
immersive experiences and education while initiating a phased reduction of live animal displays. The
thesis asserts the necessity of dedicated Experience centers for each animal species, proposing a
sustainable and innovative future for zoos grounded in animal welfare, conservation, and enhanced
visitor experiences.
