Site Analysis
Vandalur, located in the southern outskirts of Chennai,
India, presents a unique climatic profile, Characterized
by a tropical wet and dry climate, Vandalur experiences
three distinct seasons: a hot and humid summer from
March to June, a monsoon season from July to November,
and a mild winter from December to February.
The summer months bring high temperatures, often reaching up to 40°C, coupled with significant humidity. This demands architectural designs that prioritize natural ventilation,
shading, and the use of reflective materials to mitigate heat gain. The monsoon season introduces challenges with heavy rainfall, requiring effective water management
strategies such as rainwater harvesting and efficient drainage systems to prevent flooding and waterlogging. During the mild winter, temperatures average around 20°C to
25°C, which is ideal for maximizing natural light and outdoor activities. Given Vandalur’s proximity to the Bay of Bengal, it is also susceptible to cyclones, which necessitates
a the incorporation of resilient building practices to withstand high winds and torrential rains.
