Sky Sanctuary This aviary acts as a haven for
all the non-aquatic avian species
housed within the Vandalur Zoo.
It is split into five segments: Seg-
ment 1 is designed for raptors
and owls, Segment 2 for pea-
fowls and pheasants, Segment
3 for flightless birds like rheas,
emus, and cassowaries, Segment
4 for macaws and cockatoos, and
Segment 5 for smaller species of
birds segregated by their indig-
enous regions. The total area is
around 50,000 sq. m.
Initial conceptual massing involves placing all the
enclosure blocks inside the site and carving out spac-
es for other user amenities.
Refining the massing for the aviaries to provide
more volume for each enclosure, with the tensile
structure taken into consideration.
Final massing includes all the structural elements as
well as visitor and staff amenities.
The Gates that are demarcated with “G” on the site plan
are used by the staff members to traverse within the Avi-
ary enclosure within a dedicated layout of pathways.
