The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that every home should be within 300

metres (or 5 min walk as a rule of thumb) of a green space that is at least 0.5 hectares. [38]
The average distance of 913m therefore suggest a deficiency in rec-reational infrastructure

density in the selected urban region with a density of around 20,000 people per square

                  kilometre.

                  3.2.2 Social Characteristics (Urban Radii)

The social characteristics study aimed to identify the lifestyle choices and recreational
preferences of the residents of the region. The empirical survey of the residents of the region

of varied age groups showed that 35% partake in some form of recreational ac-tivity daily

and 30% weekly. (Figure 6) 75% of the surveyed group prefer walking & jogging as
primary recreation. 62% believe there’s a lack of green spaces & parks within their

neighbourhood. The survey conveys that 47% prioritise proximity to home/work for
recreation. (Figure 7) and also displays that 42% of the individuals are dissatisfied with the

availability of recreational infrastructure in their vicinity. (Figure 8)
