3.1 Gehl’s Observation Tools
Jan Gehl’s books talk about methods to observe humans in social settings to understand

what triggers a particular behavior in humans. His studio has also published several toolkits
to help understand the social interactions in a public space.
A series of suitable tools where used to conduct case studies such as
3.1.1 Moving People Count:
Gehl Studios, emphasizes the importance of studying and analyzing how people move and
interact in public spaces. One key method they prescribe is the People Moving Count, which
involves counting the number of people and understanding their demographics within a
specific active zone of a public space over a period of 10 minutes
3.2.1.1 Select an Active Zone
Identify a specific area within the public space that is considered an active zone. This could
be a busy pedestrian walkway, a plaza, or any other area with significant human activity.In
this case, the entrance court of the Mall has been chosen.
3.2.1.2 Define Boundaries
Draw an imaginary line or set boundaries for the selected active zone. This could be a line
on the ground or a defined area using landmarks or physical features.
3.2.1.3 Time Frame
Set a specific time frame for the People Moving Count. Gehl Studios suggests a duration of
10 minutes. This provides a snapshot of the flow of people through the space without being
too time-consuming.
