                    Synopsis

Tiruppur, situated approximately 60 km from Coimbatore City and dubbed as the Manchester of
South India, evolved alongside the Noyyal River. Originally part of the Coimbatore district, it became
the capital of the Tiruppur District in 2009. Renowned for its textile and garment industry, it emerged
from an agricultural town in the 1950s and 1960s, transitioning to small-scale industrial units due to
water scarcity for farming. With mineral-rich water conducive to garment production, the city's
textile industry flourished, and exporting orders since 1978, notably collaborating with an Italian
clothing cluster. By the 1980s, it established itself as a global textile market, earning monikers like
Dollar City and Small Japan. Operating as an industrial cluster, Tiruppur hosts numerous MSMEs
catering to various knitwear processes, significantly boosting exports from 10 Crores in 1985 to 5000
Crores in 2003. Presently, it manufactures for major international brands, employing over six lakh
individuals and contributing significantly to India's textile exports. To sustain its global leadership,
the Tiruppur Exporters Association was formed in 1990, aiding in international buyer-seller
matchmaking. The city has also witnessed infrastructural developments like the Netaji Apparel Park
and the Tiruppur Export Knitwear Industrial Complex. However, a proposed convention center at
Townhall faces criticism for its inadequate scale, prompting the need for a larger facility aligned with
the city's smart city agenda. Thus, this thesis proposes a comprehensive exhibition and convention
center in Tiruppur, honoring its agricultural roots and industrial prowess while addressing present
                     and future needs.
