Topic Title: Pilgrim’s Hub – A Harmonious Sanctuary for Pilgrims
Supervisor: Prof. Kumareswari
Synopsis
Situated at the base of the majestic Azhagar Hills, the renowned Azhagar Temple stands as a
prominent religious site in Madurai. However, with the growing influx of visitors, the existing
facilities of the temple have become insufficient to cater to the needs of the expanding floating
population. In light of the rapid urbanization surrounding the temple, it has become imperative to
enhance the temple's infrastructure and services. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop a
space within the temple premises that not only rejuvenates its visitors but also demonstrates a deep
reverence for the natural environment. This will be achieved by striking a harmonious balance
between innovative sustainable design concepts and the serene ambiance of the countryside.
Within the hub, there are various accommodation units available for pilgrims, known as Yatri Niwas.
Additionally, there is a museum that serves the purpose of educating visitors about the temple's
history and enlightening them about the stories of the deities, providing both entertainment and
knowledge. The communal spaces within the hub include an auditorium that will host cultural events,
fostering a sense of community bonding and spirituality. The design of the hub takes into
consideration the diverse needs of pilgrims, providing accommodation options for individuals,
families, and larger groups. Furthermore, there is a temporary refreshment area dedicated to serving
the pilgrims. To enhance the cultural experience, the hub incorporates, religious symbols, and
interpretive displays that vividly depict the rich history and culture of the temple.
The site for the project was selected inside the temple complex, following government proposals and
approvals. The project itself is designed to prioritize energy efficiency and eco-friendly practices,
with a strong focus on sustainable architecture. The thesis will delve into a comprehensive analysis
of the area, considering the social, economic, and ecological aspects. Ultimately, the findings of this
thesis will demonstrate how traditional and modern architectural elements have been seamlessly
integrated to create a hub that is culturally sensitive and fulfil the needs of the pilgrims.
