                    Synopsis

The cultural landscape is fashioned from a natural landscape by a cultural group. Culture is the
agent; the natural area is the medium; the cultural landscape the result.”
                                                                             - Geographer Carl Ortwin Sauer

“Culture” refers to the way of life of any given community including its shared beliefs, traditions,
behaviors, and material objects. The term "Cultural Landscape" refers to the combined works of
nature and humankind, signifying an extensive and complex interaction between humans and the
environment. It includes physical components, ecosystems, and manmade components that are
shaped by human activity and have cultural, historical, or economic importance.
The present-day Cultural Landscape of Anegundi is a manifestation of its local context and culture
shaped over time. It is largely influenced by the economy of its communities which is based on the
concept of "Circular Economy", a system aiming at potential use of the local cultivation waste and
transforming it into sustainable artefacts by decreasing external resource use and waste generation
while fostering sustainable production and consumption habits. It provides opportunity for the local
community to innovate and add value while also contributing to environmental sustainability,
strengthening local economy, and improving societal well-being.
Thus, this thesis is an attempt to promote the legacy of indigenous crafts of Anegundi, strengthen the
livelihoods of artisanal communities in both local and neighbouring villages, raise heritage awareness
among the local population, encourage the influx of tourists, provide them with authentic knowledge
and experiences- through vocational and workshop spaces, and accommodations. In addition, given
the rich past of Anegundi, it has the potential to provide interpretive knowledge of its rich heritage-
through visitor’s centre, archive/library and exhibition spaces. As a result, the basis for this thesis is
a sustainable hub for promotion of crafts of Anegundi and its historic heritage, both contributing to
the development of sustainable tourism in the region.
