4.1Site Overview

The location of the site at Paiyanur is strategically close to Mahabalipuram town. Due to its
status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mahabalipuram has become the most popular
tourist destination.
Mamallapuram, located on the Bay of Bengal coast around 60 km south of Chennai, is
mostly accessible by road from Chennai via the East Coast Road and the Old
Mamallapuram Road.Mamallapuram is to the west of the Buckingham Canal. The
settlements of Paiyanur and Saluvankuppam are to the north. in the settlement of South
Kadambadi. The nuclear power plant Kalpakkam is located on the town's southern edge.
When the Pallava dynasty ruled there in the third and seventh centuries CE, this mediaeval
town—a UNESCO World Heritage site—became a major hub for literature, art, and art.
Mahabalipuram's extravagant sculpture generates a particular sense of architectural
mystique.To honour the region's long history, it also presents a range of cultural events each
year, such as plays and dance performances.According to statistics, 1.5 lakh foreign visitors,
or 45.5% of all visitors to ASI protected monuments, make their way into the town.
