3.1. Vellore District & Sessions Court

In 2001, the Vellore district witnessed the inauguration of its fast-track court,

which was later expanded with the addition of more blocks. The District Court,
presided over by a Judge, delivers justice at the district level and operates
                        Thesis Report V-SPARC VIT
under the supervision of the High Court of Tamil Nadu. Within each district,

the apex court is the District and Sessions Judge's court, where both civil and

criminal cases are adjudicated, with the authority to impose any sentence,
                     including the death penalty.

Beneath the District and Sessions Judge's court, there are various subordinate

courts. The Judicial Magistrate's court, being the lowest tier of criminal
courts, handles criminal cases that carry a maximum sentence of up to 5 years

of imprisonment. On the civil side, the lowest court is that of the Civil Judge

(Junior Division), which has the jurisdiction to resolve civil matters involving
                     smaller financial claims.
