5.2 History and Evolution
Tamil Nadu, India's Thiruvidandai is a suburban village. It is located in South Chennai, 4
km from Kovalam and roughly 19 km south of Thiruvanmiyur on the East Coast Road. The
village got its name from the Nithyakalyana Perumal temple, which has been important to
the community's history. The temple was constructed in the seventh century, under the
Pallava dynasty. The Pallavas, whose capital was Kanchipuram, ruled over the area from the
sixth to the ninth century. Their port towns, Mamallapuram and Thiruvidanthai, developed
into significant harbors for the Empire. The hours of operation for the temple are 6:30 a.m.
to 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
