Dean's Message

         Dear Colleagues,

It is indeed a great pleasure to put forth the annual report of the School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) for the year 2022-2023.

This is a remarkable year for our school. A great source of pride for the school is the extensive research support received from a
number of national and international funding bodies, including the British Council, Royal Academy of Engineering, DST, DRDO, MNRE,
CSIT, CVRDE, MOES, AR&DB to name a few. Under the Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE)
programme, the DST has additionally awarded institutional funding to the school in 2021-22 to support research in additive
manufacturing. At SMEC, facilities such as Laser Bed Fusion 3D Metal Printer, XPS, ICP-MS, TriboNano Indenter and many more
through the PURSE grant have been established.

For the third time in 2022, our school has also been approved the grant to establish the high-temperature fatigue testing facility
under the Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST) Programme, the
Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

I am elated to inform that our school is the pioneer in promoting interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary areas of research including
Additive Manufacturing Technology, Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technology, Composites and Nano-composites, Hydrogen storage,
Advanced Materials and Processing, Material Characterization, Robotics, Mechatronics and Automation, Industry 4.0, Circular
Economy and few more. This year, we have received a total grant of 5.11 crores INR from 13 funded projects at national and
international levels. The school has also attracted many consultancy projects and internship opportunities through our Industry-
Academia Networking Conclave (IANC2023) which was held in February 2023.
The School has implemented a new futuristic curriculum in B.Tech and M.Tech by integrating courses that meet the needs of
industry. During 2022-2023, the school has conducted a considerable number of workshops, value-added courses, certification
courses, seminars and two major conferences. We also had renowned speakers from Industry and Academia to deliver lectures on
contemporary issues as a part of our curriculum.
Our students’ participation in industry/research internships and Semester Abroad Programmes had been facilitated through the
Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and partnerships with esteemed Universities and Industries all over the world. Through
these MOUs, our students are able to complete their research internships with the support of esteemed fellowships like DAAD-WISE,
MITACS. The placement numbers are astounding and many of our students received multiple job offers, including both dream and
super-dream offers. Thanks to our institute's Career Development Centre.

Many of our faculty members have received praiseworthy awards/accolades/honors / recognitions from both domestic and foreign
organisations and it’s obvious that our SMEC faculty team has a strong commitment in doing high-quality research. We are excited to
collaborate with partners from academia, industry, and government with respect to our research/educational initiatives. We can
combine our abilities to confront society's most pressing challenges and play a significant role in honing our local and global
         communities.

The immense dedication of the faculty members, staff, and students of SMEC with the support and encouragement of a plethora of
well-wishers, including alumni, members of the Board of Studies, Industry and academic partners, have made SMEC to immensely
scale up to greater heights and helped the school to accomplish more over the years possible.

Let’s together make a worthy society for tomorrow!
                                                                   Sincerely,

                                                                   Dr. Devendranath Ramkumar
