EDITORIAL
Welcome to this edition of MechnoVIT – your window to the exciting happenings within the GD Naidu Block which now is
completely refurbished and sports a smart new look.
VIT has a lot to be happy about in the fourth quarter. It has risen 10 places in the QS Asia Rankings and is now ranked among the
top 200 in Asia, and SMEC, as one of the best performing schools, has undoubtedly played a significant role. Furthermore, VIT
ranks very high in the QS Sustainability Ranking.
Our Honourable Chancellor inaugurated the world-class "Centre of Excellence in Additive Manufacturing" funded by DST under
the PURSE scheme on 02 December 2023 The Chief Guest was Dr. Pratishtha Pandey, Head of the DST's R&D Infrastructure
Division.
Laurels galore vis-à-vis students’ accomplishments. We are very proud of all of them. These include group awards
based on club activities as well as scholastic excellence. In the former category we congratulate RoboVITics Club – for securing
the 1 Place in the Robowars event Pune, Team Rev Mechanics under the SAE-VIT, Team Veloce, Team Trinity, a group of
st
exceptionally talented students from SMEC, has emerged victorious at the Smart India Hackathon 2023 held at NIE-Mysore. In
the latter category, we are happy to announce that Mr. Krish Mehta was selected for two internships from ISRO during October.
The first internship was at NRSC, ISRO and the second in VSSC, ISRO. Mr. Mirza Haider Ali got a Super dream placement. Mr.
Neelansh Garg, Ms. Aashna Chopra, Mr. Selvaraj Balachandran have successfully completed their student exchange program
from Fontys University, Netherlands under Erasmus+ Scheme.
SMEC B.Tech students have published very high impact factor (>8) peer reviewed from their Capstone Projects
resulting in an increase of Institutional h-index. Our student Alumnus Sidhant Pattanaik was admitted to the Nanyang
Technological University (NTU), Singapore for M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering program. In the previous issue we had showcased
the outstanding physical culture attainment of Mr Aravindan, and in this edition, we are proud to mention that he has exceed his
own record by walking 21 km per day for 123 consecutive days. 13 Scholars were awarded PhDs. Hearty congratulations to the
Scholars as well as their Guides. Five Industrial visits – a compulsory requirement now, were organised this quarter.
A highly recommended exercise that faculty are expected to deliver relates to Patents. SMEC is proud to announce
that this quarter the school garnered 14 Patents – the highest number among all Schools in VIT. Congratulations to the
Patentees! Another, exceptional record was set as part of Faculty accomplishments in the award of 4 British Council Going
Global Grants wherein SMEC Professors were partnered with UK University professors. Additionally, there were two other
major International Grants awarded – one from the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering and the other from the European Union.
There were two other National Grant awards as well-from the ICMR and the DST.
The granting of a high number of Patents, Consultancy Projects and the award of major International and National
Grants sets apart the caliber of SMEC faculty and we congratulate them wholeheartedly.
The RAISE conference inauguration by the Honorable chancellor was a high point among SMEC’s most significant
programs, this involved many leading international universities along with Indian universities. A one-day seminar on "e-
Mobility" was organized in collaboration with Aston University and Kings College London, UK, as part of the Going Global
Partnership Call. Several high-end training programmes were also organised this quarter. SMEC faculty as always continue to
publish very high-quality papers. This quarter there were twelve Q1 journal papers. A very significant achievement. There were
several national and international talks delivered across institutions.
Finally, we have included one of our standard features, "Alumni Corner" (written by Mr. Kathan Bhasvar, who has a Master's
degree in Aerospace Engineering from Toulouse). Mr Vishnu Jayakumar (Head-Operation Excellence, Ortholite India Pvt Ltd.,
Ambur) has been added to the "Tech Chat Section." We'd also like to welcome our new student editorial team.
