The principal investigator has the autonomy for the utilisation of the
overhead charges for expanding the infrastructure that are required for the
project
Purchase of instruments and necessary consumables, as mentioned in the
project, are given preference and are facilitated by the Purchase office of
the University
The Finance office helps the Principal Investigator for preparing the
balance sheet and for auditing the finance statement by an external auditor.
The office also makes the utilisation certificate to be made available on
time for submission to the funding authorities, normally made along with
the project progress report.
3.1.4 How is interdisciplinary research promoted?
Several steps have been initiated to promote interdisciplinary research with
members within and outside the University.
The following are the established research centres within the campus,
focusing on multi-disciplinary research: [1] Centre for Bioseparation
Technology, [2] Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management, [3]
Centre for Nanotechnology, [4] TIFAC-CORE in Automotive Electronics.
In addition, the faculty members are encouraged to start Research Centres
in different areas of societal / national / international interest. In most of
the proposed centres, faculty members from different disciplines and
expertise join the research group. Research proposals have been sent from
these centres for possible funding from governmental agencies. One of
such emerging centre is the Centre for Nanobiotechnology (CNBT), which
primarily focuses on the synthesis, characterization and application of
inorganic nanoparticles to biological application. Similarly, several other
such research centres are in the developing stage. The University has
plans to give seed money for proposals for such interdisciplinary research.
The University also arranges for the ‘Retreat’, in which the faculty
members from different schools present their area of research and express
their desire for collaboration in areas beyond their expertise. Such
exercise paves the way for mutual understanding of the research work that
is taken up by the faculty members belonging to other Schools. The
University has recently identified two major areas of focus: [1] Health
Science and Technology and [2] Automotive Engineering and
Manufacturing.
In order to promote collaborative research with other institutes / industries,
in the above disciplines, the University has created platforms on a number
of occasions in which discussions have been held between the faculty
members and the personnel from industry (Nicholas Piramal, Biocon,
Astra Zeneca and several others – from engineering and pharmaceutical)
and other reputed institutes (IISc, NCBI, IIT and others) on possible
research areas that could be focused.
In the international arena, interactions with personnel from Massachusetts
General Hospital, Harvard Health Science and Technology and others
were facilitated. ‘Hackathon’ type of events are also organized for
