Has the university conducted any study on the academic growth of
students from disadvantaged sections of society, economically
disadvantaged, physically handicapped, slow learners, etc.? If yes, what
are the main findings?
The following are the steps taken by the university to assist the weaker
sections of the students:
Economically weaker sections:
This category is covered under the ‘Support
the Advancement of Rural Students (STARS)’ programme of the University.
100% tuition fee waiver is given to one boy and one girl student topping the
qualifying examination (12
th
standard), in each district of Tamil Nadu. The
students should have studied in rural government higher secondary schools.

students have benefited by this programme in the Academic
year 2011 – 2012 and 2012 – 2013, respectively. The University spent Rs.
2,47,44,000 and Rs. 4,03,11,500 on these students in the academic years 2011-
2012 and 2012-2013, respectively.
Slow learners:
After the first internal assessment in each semester, students
who secure less than the qualifying marks (50%) are identified, and they are
given additional guidance by the same faculty during week ends. In addition
to this
Student Assisted Teaching
is also being taken up on a pilot basis.
Students who secure good marks in the same examination are requested to
assist the slow learners. This, of course, is done with the guidance of the
course teacher. It is found that there is improvement in the performance in the
subsequent assessments.
2.2.5
How does the university identify and respond to the learning needs
of advanced learners?
The Fully Flexible Credit System has been found to be beneficial to the
advanced learners. There are a number of options available for this category
of students.
1.
The students can complete additional courses that are not limited to
their programme curriculum and obtain a ‘Minor’ degree. The list of minors is
available, and is visible to students.
2.
The students can complete additional courses listed in their programme
curriculum and can obtain an ‘Honours’ degree.
3.
The undergraduate students can take courses offered for the Master’s
degree of the same category, as part of their University elective.
4.
The students also have a choice to take up research activities under the
‘Undergraduate Research Experience’ provision. The details of this are
discussed elsewhere. (please refer section 2.6.5)
