The Matrimandir is considered to be the heart and soul of Auroville,
embodying its core values and aspirations.
The center of the city is the oval Peace Area where the Matrimandir, the soul
of Auroville, is located. Matrimandir is surrounded by 12 petals and 12
gardens. Right next to it is a giant banyan tree which is the geographical

centre of Auroville.
The Matrimandir, a huge gold disc-clad sphere, which seems to be rising out
of the earth, symbolizes the birth of a new consciousness. All of these are
surrounded by a lake in the making, creating an atmosphere of calm and
serenity and serving water to the city in the future.
The Peace Area is designed to evoke a sense of tranquility and harmony. The
idea is to create a space where individuals can connect with their inner selves,
fostering a sense of peace that can radiate outward into the community and
the world.
The Peace Area is not just a physical space, it embodies the aspiration for
global peace and unity. Auroville envisions itself as a universal town where
people from different nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds come together
in a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. The Peace Area, with the
Matrimandir at its center, symbolizes the collective aspiration for a world free
from conflict and division.
The philosophy behind Matrimandir and the Peace Area in Auroville is deeply
spiritual and inclusive. It reflects the Auroville community's commitment to
transcending boundaries, fostering inner growth, and working towards the
realization of human unity and peace on a global scale.
