The habitat design, named the "Lunar Lantern" due to its dual protective shield, embodies a
design philosophy centered on human factors principles to guarantee the safety and well-being
of the crew. Project Olympus overall aims to create robust, self-sustaining, and adaptable
surface buildings using cutting-edge 3D-printing technologies.
Constraint: Increased construction time
Energy required to build a 2sqm wall equals 1000kwh
Base isolators, acting as seismic dampeners at the foundation, absorb shocks from both shallow
and deep "moonquakes," caused by temperature shifts and meteorite impacts. Externally
mounted tension cables compress the 3D-printed walls, while the Whipple Shield, a double-
layered structure with an interior lattice and external panels, provides protection against
micrometeorite impacts and extreme heat from sunlight exposure.
