7.2.2. Creating Gabion Wall: A Story Telling Feature Wall

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, is a poignant testament to
the country's history of racial segregation and the struggle for freedom and

equality. One of the most striking features of the museum is the ramp and stone

wall constructed using stones piled by visitors while pledging to fight racism.
This concept of building a gabion wall, or a wall made of stacked stones contained

within wire mesh baskets, draws inspiration from the Apartheid Museum's

interactive and participatory approach to memorialization. Gabion walls have been

used for centuries in various cultures around the world for their practicality,
strength, and aesthetic appeal. However, in the context of the Apartheid Museum,

the use of gabion walls takes on a deeper significance.
