Project Description
The biggest problem being faced in this era is the increasing amount of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), thus posing serious climatic issues. CO2 being the majority of around 77% amongst all the GHGs. The worldwide production and various uses of plastics has blindfolded the amount of waste it creates every year. Hence there is an immediate need to shift towards more renewable and sustainable resources. This project focuses on the production of bioplastic polymers using microorganisms that can sequester CO2 as feed stock. Bioplastic and biobased plastics are excellent alternatives for the conventional fossil based plastics as they are more eco-friendly. The use of bio electrochemical system (BES) and gas fermentation process assists in culturing bacteria’s for the production of poly-hydroxybutyrate (PHB). The selectively enriched microbiome will be developed by co-culturing different bacteria’s and preparing the enriched activated consortium along with optimization to maximise the yield of PHB.
