Project Description
Activated platelets mediate systemic inflammation by directly interacting with leukocytes and endothelial cells, and by releasing inflammatory factors in the blood. These activated platelets also contain functional NLRP3 inflammosomes whose role in platelet-mediated pathophysiology is unclear. Since only a handful of studies have shown NLRP3 activation in platelets, and the mechanism of NLRP3 activation in platelets is still unknown, this study is aimed at finding the role of NLRP3 activation on human and murine platelets in mediating inflammation which could lead to the development of novel therapeutics in the future.
