Graphical Abstract
Project Description
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common medical concern with potential morbidity or mortality if inadequately treated. The escalating global health threat of Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among uropathogens necessitates addressing the overuse of antibiotics. Traditional treatments, such as co-trimoxazole and quinolones, face challenges due to evolving drug-resistant bacteria. To counter this, decentralized testing in outpatient clinics is crucial to prevent antibiotic misuse.
This study proposes using untargeted LC-QTOF-MS/MS metabolomics on UTI urine samples to identify microbial metabolites in susceptible and resistant UTI patients. Whole Genome Metagenomic analyses will quantitatively characterize UTI pathogens. Associating metabolomic-genomic data will identify molecular biomarkers differentiating patients from healthy controls, guiding treatment decisions. The microbiome will offer insights into therapeutic targets, with potential metabolites validated using WGS data.
The study's outcome will present novel biomarkers, aiding accurate diagnoses, therapy decisions, and expediting infection treatment and enhancing patient care.
