EVALUATIVE REPORT OF THE
CENTRE FOR BIOSEPARATION TECHNOLOGY

Name of the Centre
CENTRE FOR BIOSEPARATION TECHNOLOGY (CBST)
The Centre for Bio-Separation Technology (CBST) was created with initiative of
Prof. M.A.Vijayalakshmi at VIT University, Vellore in the year 2005 under the
programme,
"Intensification of Research in High Priority Areas”
funded by
Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India
. The Indian
Government had identified her expertise in the field of Bioseparation Technology and
invited her from France to set up the center in India to help our country in developing
this important area much required for Industry-Academia in R &
D. The Centre is projected by the DST as a 'National Facility' for Research &
Development and training, and caters to postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral
researchers.
The Centre is monitored by steering committee composed of eminent scientists both
from India and abroad along with the top members from the management of VIT
University.
After very successful completion of the first phase of five years, the centre went through
an independent “
PERFORMANCE AUDIT
” in May 2009, by a
committee headed by
the President of Indian National Science Academy (INSA)
, and was recommended for
up-gradation to an
“ADVANCED CENTRE”,
to further strengthen its activities
in the field of bioseparation and related technologies. Acknowledging its high-level
expertise and the potential, CBST has been granted second phase of funding from DST
to the tune of Rs. 120 millions.
