covers selected topics related to the course. The mentor helps the students to
design, execute and analyze the project work. The mentor is also responsible
for evaluating the progress of the student and makes the students understand
the concepts involved. Such design of experiments helps the students to have a
thorough understanding of the concepts than compared to the normal
methodology of class room teaching. Also, as the projects are performed in
groups, the student also learns the art of getting colonized with others which
definitely is being looked upon as one of the best qualities by the industries.
Evidence of Success
Project based learning was introduced during the academic year 2010 – 2011.
As a pilot study it was started with the courses for the final year B.Tech
students handled by selected faculty members. The interest shown by the
students and the ease with which the students could grasp the fundamental
principles as well as the applied aspects of the courses has really contributed
to the growth in the number of courses under this category. During this
academic year (2012 – 2013), about 37% of the undergraduate courses are
under Project based learning. The photographs (solar lamp – left panel; solar
water desalination plant – right panel) given below indicate the proto-type
products developed by the students for a particular course.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required
The students need to find enough time amidst their busy academic schedule,
inclusive of preparation for their various examinations. Some courses demand
greater infrastructure and high end instrumentation for effective
implementation of this practice. However, the university has taken necessary
initiative to address the issues.
