Recently, VIT has implemented the “My-Tree” programme.
Under this scheme, Faculty, Staff and students are encouraged
to plant samplings. A board displays their name on the tree
guard. The logistics of the plantations and maintenance of the
saplings are taken care by VIT.
To facilitate these innovative practices, the University has constituted the
‘Campus Development Advisory Group’. Periodical review / open
meetings of this group are held. Students are involved in this effort, to
make the campus more eco-friendly. Some of the outcomes of this group
are:
[1] Color coded dust bins kept at specific locations in the campus for
segregating the wastes
[2] Introduction of battery cars within the campus
[3] Promotion of bicycle for point-to-point transfer
The other objectives of this group are:
[1] To implement ‘Motion detection switches’ in order to conserve energy
[2] To minimize the use of plastics within the campus
[3] To reduce the number of fuel driven vehicles within the campus
[4] To avoid unnecessary use of paper napkins
Hazardous waste management
Necessary pretreatment of the chemical wastes, from the laboratories, are

chemical laboratories is not mixed with other liquid wastes. Similarly,
sufficient pre-treatment is done for the microbes, to avoid undue
contamination to the environment.
