5.1 Student Mentoring and Support
5.1.1
Does the university have a system for student support and
mentoring? If yes, what are its structural and functional
characteristics?
A fully functional Students Welfare Office, headed by a Director, is
responsible for the student support and mentoring activities. The office
takes care of the Student Council, Student Grievance Redressal Cell,
Student Counseling and Student Proctoring.
The following are the full time student counselors:
Mr. Paul T Vedamuthu M.A.(Ind) M.A.(US) CSAC (US)
Prof. Dr.M Bhuvaneswari M.A., M.Ed., M.Phil., PhD(Psy).,
Ms. Sindhu, B.Sc B.Ed., PG (Psychotheraphy and Counselling),
M.Sc.(Clinical Psychology), PG(Guidance and Counseling)
Ms. Kalyani Biswal, B.A. (Psychology Honours), M.A. (Counseling
Psychology), PG (Diploma in Rehabilitation Psychology)
In addition, at the school level there are Programme Chairs and Faculty
advisors to assist the students academically.
5.1.2
Apart from classroom interaction, what are the provisions
available for academic mentoring?
We have the proctor scheme where each faculty takes care of 15-20
students in both academic and non-academic activities. The Institute
monitors the progress of the students at a closer level by a scheme called
Proctor Scheme
. Under this Scheme about 20 to 25 students are assigned
to a faculty who will maintain a record of the academic progress (
Proctor
Diary
) of the students and have closer interaction with the students and
provide guidance and counselling. The Proctor can call for a meeting of
the students during assigned hours or at the convenience of both faculty
and students. He/She can have meetings with the parents if needed.
Normally the guidance and counselling provided by a Proctor may include:
Giving information concerning career opportunities and availability of
educational / instructional resources;
Helping students to cope with any difficulties in learning;
Solving personal problems, if any
Providing help to improve Interpersonal relationships
Serving as a bridge between parents and the teachers.
